Tea by intention
Relax / Sleep / Stress tea
The need to decompress and relax is of paramount importance if a person is to recover from stress. Switching into relax mode after a long day is not an easy thing to do. The teas featured in this category will make the transition an easier one. Notably, these teas are all herbal: camomile, lavender, rose and chrysanthemum form the base of the beverages that help you to unwind from the onslaught of the day.

Choosing and brewing an evening tea
Tea types that suit bedtime
The golden rule for an evening cup is no caffeine, which points you toward herbal infusions and rooibos rather than black, green or oolong. Chamomile is the classic: mild, apple-scented and easy to love. Lavender and rose add a floral note, lemon balm brings a soft citrus lift, and valerian root and passionflower have long been used in traditional European herbalism in blends for evening rest. Rooibos makes a rounder, naturally sweet base for those who find pure herbals too light.
Valerian has a strong, earthy aroma that some people dislike, so if you are new to it, try it in a blend where chamomile or mint softens the edges.
Building the ritual
Many people find the routine matters as much as the herbs. Brew your cup 45–60 minutes before bed, so you are not drinking a large mug right before lights out, and pair it with something screen-free — a book, a stretch, a few quiet minutes. Keep the portion modest, around 250 ml, so a full glass of liquid does not wake you in the night.
Brewing for full flavour
Dried flowers and roots need boiling water and a longer steep than tea leaves. Cover your mug while it steeps — those fragrant oils are much of the appeal, and a saucer on top keeps them in the cup.
Caffeine notes
Caffeine can linger for hours, so some people prefer to avoid even green or white tea after mid-afternoon. Watch for blends that sound herbal but include a tea base, such as some jasmine, chai or Earl Grey-style evening blends, and look for decaf versions or pure herbals instead. If you love the taste of black tea at night, a rooibos breakfast-style blend with milk gives a similar comfort without the caffeine.

Frequently asked questions
Which teas are caffeine-free for the evening?
Herbal infusions such as chamomile, lavender, lemon balm, peppermint and rooibos contain no caffeine. Avoid black, green, white, oolong and matcha late in the day, and check blends for tea or mate.
How long before bed should I drink it?
About 45–60 minutes before bed works well for most people, giving you time to enjoy it without needing to get up in the night.
Can I drink chamomile every night?
Chamomile is enjoyed nightly by many people. Those with ragweed or daisy-family allergies should be cautious, and anyone pregnant or on medication should check with a healthcare professional.
Can I add milk or honey?
Honey pairs beautifully with chamomile and lavender. Rooibos-based blends also take milk well for a creamy bedtime latte.
Is decaf black tea a good bedtime option?
Decaffeinated tea still holds a small amount of caffeine, usually just a few milligrams. Most people tolerate that well, but if you are very sensitive, a naturally caffeine-free herbal or rooibos is the safer choice.
