About Peppermint
A guide to peppermint tea
What is peppermint tea?
Peppermint tea is a herbal infusion made from the dried leaves of the peppermint plant (Mentha × piperita), a natural cross between watermint and spearmint. It is one of the most popular herbal teas in the world and a classic after-dinner cup.
Peppermint is also a favourite blending partner. On this page you will find teas where peppermint is the star or a supporting note, from herbal blends to a peppermint matcha.
How it tastes
Peppermint brews a pale green-gold cup with a cool, clean, refreshing flavour from its natural menthol. It is bolder and more cooling than spearmint, which is sweeter and softer. In blends, peppermint adds a bright, fresh lift to chocolatey, fruity or floral flavours.
How to brew peppermint tea
Use freshly boiled water at about 100°C and 1.5–2 g per 250 ml — peppermint is strongly flavoured, so a little goes a long way. Steep for 5–7 minutes, covered to keep the aromatic oils in your cup. Peppermint matcha is whisked rather than steeped: use cooler water, around 75–80°C.
Peppermint is excellent iced: brew it double strength, pour over ice and add a slice of lemon or lime. Browse our selection above for peppermint teas and blends.
Caffeine in peppermint tea
Pure peppermint tea is naturally caffeine-free. Blends that combine peppermint with green tea or matcha do contain caffeine, so check the ingredients on each tea's page if you are avoiding it.

Frequently asked questions
Does peppermint tea have caffeine?
Pure peppermint is caffeine-free. Blends with green tea or matcha, such as a peppermint matcha, contain caffeine.
What is the difference between peppermint and spearmint?
Peppermint has more menthol, so it tastes cooler and stronger. Spearmint is sweeter and milder.
Can I make iced peppermint tea?
Yes, it is one of the most refreshing iced herbal teas. Brew it double strength over ice, or cold-brew it in the fridge for 6–8 hours.
Why should I cover peppermint tea while it steeps?
The flavour comes from aromatic oils that escape with the steam. Covering the cup keeps more of that flavour in your tea.
Can I re-steep peppermint leaves?
Usually once. The second cup will be lighter; steep it a little longer to get more flavour.
