About Ginger
A guide to ginger tea
What is ginger tea?
Ginger tea is made with dried pieces of ginger root, the same knobbly rhizome used in cooking across Asia, the Caribbean and beyond. On its own it makes a spicy herbal infusion, and it is a key ingredient in many blends — chai, turmeric blends, fruit tisanes and spiced green and black teas.
This page brings together every tea in our range that features ginger, wherever it sits in the shop, so you can compare warming herbal blends, spiced chais and more side by side.
How it tastes
Ginger gives a warm, peppery heat with a bright, zesty edge. Its strength builds the longer it steeps. Paired with cinnamon and cardamom it turns rich and festive, as in chai; with lemon or citrus peel it tastes fresh and lively; and with turmeric it becomes earthy and golden. A little honey softens its bite nicely.
How to brew ginger tea
For herbal ginger blends, use freshly boiled water at about 100°C, 2–3 g per 250 ml, and steep for 5–7 minutes — longer if you like more heat. Chai blends with black tea are best at 95–100°C for 4–5 minutes, and are delicious simmered with milk. For ginger blends based on green tea, drop the water to 75–80°C and steep for 2–3 minutes.
Ginger teas also work well iced, especially with citrus. Browse our selection above for every tea with ginger.
Caffeine in ginger tea
Ginger itself contains no caffeine, so herbal ginger blends are caffeine-free. Chai and other ginger blends made with black or green tea do contain caffeine; each tea's page lists its ingredients so you can tell at a glance.
| Tea | Water | Steep | Leaf | Caffeine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Herbal ginger blends | 100°C | 5–7 min | 2–3 g | None |
| Chai with black tea | 95–100°C | 4–5 min | 2–3 g | Moderate |
| Ginger with green tea | 75–80°C | 2–3 min | 2–3 g | Low–moderate |
Frequently asked questions
Is ginger tea caffeine-free?
Herbal ginger blends are. Chai and other ginger blends made with black or green tea contain caffeine.
How do I make ginger tea stronger?
Steep it longer, up to 10 minutes for herbal blends, or use a little more leaf. Ginger keeps getting spicier without turning bitter.
Can I add milk to ginger tea?
Yes, especially chai and other spiced blends with black tea. Simmer them with milk on the stove for a rich, creamy cup.
What goes well with ginger tea?
Honey, lemon, orange and cinnamon all pair well with ginger. Many of our blends already combine it with citrus or warming spices.
Can I drink ginger tea iced?
Yes. Brew it double strength and pour it over ice with a slice of lemon or orange for a spicy, refreshing drink.
